Work Harder vs Work Smarter

If you are a fresh graduate, you need both to survive through. I recall my 1st year working experience where I have to stay late every day & almost every weekend, I will be in office till evening to complete my work. For me personally, I take it as learning with the all work that I did. I do not mind the extra hours but I have to learn from the tasks given. My indirect supervisor has the habit of giving the bunch of us tasks on Fri evening & require results by Mon.
That is work hard.

Work smart would mean that for all the work that I have done, whether I do understand the process flow / method & if there is any way that I can improve perhaps to reduce the time taken to complete each task / simplify the task so that the outcome / results will be better. Well, that is work smart. By understand the overall work process, time will be reduce to execute similar task & can be used to execute new task / for improvement purposes.
Therefore I would believe as a fresh graduate, you will need both to be more experienced & you can focus on how to work smarter. What do you think?

What is the Right Job for me?

Conversation between recruiter with a fresh graduate

Recruiter: What is the job that you would be interested?
Graduate: Anything that is relevant to my field of study
Recruiter Any specfic one that interests you?
Graduate: Anything

These are the common answer that you will expect from a graduate.
If you are one of them, pls avoid them in your next interview.

Becoming More Approachable in Organization

With tough times ahead, here are some tips plucked from an article to become known as a more approachable person in your organization.

Whether you’re an office professional, middle manager, executive, executing these strategies will accomplish three goals:
(1) Boost the net worth of your human capital
(2) Attract MORE attention, MORE people and MORE opportunities into your world
(3) Increase the possibility for the company to keep you in the organization

A) Boost your communication self-awareness.
You think you’re approachable. And maybe you are. But it doesn’t matter what you think. It matters what other people remember. It matters what other people feel. So, view performance feedback as a learning opportunity to find out where you can do better.

B) Be assertive, not aggressive.
Here’s the difference: Assertive allows dialogue; aggressive prohibits listening. Assertive seeks solutions; aggressive just blames. Assertive is direct; aggressive is blunt. Assertive takes charge; aggressive takes over. Assertive invites collaboration; aggressive seeks compliance.

C) Expand your openness to learning from others.
Not only does it demonstrate openness to learn form others; it also makes people feel essential. It shows you listened, it shows you care and it shows you’re approachable enough to learn from anybody, anytime, anywhere.

D) Allow people to experience that they can change your mind.
Defensiveness is defined as “the attempt to prevent new ideas from entering into your world.” This, of course, is dangerous, as there are always people who are more experienced than you are.

E) Recognize disagreements as opportunities.
Not arguing. Not backing away. Not getting defensive. Don’t view feedback as a direct challenge to your intelligence and authority, nor as a threat to your position or role. Get over yourself and get inside the words. How many new opportunities did you overlook yesterday because you were blinded by defensiveness? How are you encouraging disagreements? And what would happen to your perception as a leader if you greeted all comments, ideas and suggestions with a welcoming heart?

Can You Decline An Interview Appointment?

Can you reject an interview arrangement for a vacancy that you applied earlier? There is no harm to attend interviews even though you have had accepted a new offer & started work. Or even if you are no longer interested.

It is a chance or opportunity for the Hiring Manager to get to know you & maybe there are interesting findings about the job which makes you think twice. Therefore grab every opportunity that you have.

Why Should We Hire You?

A typical interview question on why you would be the best candidate for the position, is "Why should we hire you?"
The best way to respond is to give concrete examples of why your skills and accomplishments make you the best candidate for the job. Take a few moments to compare the job description with your abilities.

1) If the job is relevant to what you have done in the past, then mention what you have accomplished & your contributions including experience in the previous company that you can bring value to the current company. Eg, I have manage to improve the process yield from 90% to consistently maintain it at 97% through various introducing improvements on equipments. Adding on to that, I believe that being in quality, customer complaints is a key indicator of success. Another success is that I manage to reduce the customer complaints to a very minimum figure. With my past achievements, I believe that I am able to bring value to your company.

2) If the job is not relevant or you plan to move into something different, talk about your skill sets or your passion & motivation that will bring you ahead from others in the industry / company you are applying for. Eg, I may not have the relevant experience but with my outgoing personality & my experience liaising with internal & external parties in my previous job, I believe sales would the right fit for me to grow in my career.

How to Asnwer "Are You Willing to Travel?"

How would you asnwer if you were asked this question on your willingness to travel.
Tt is fine to ask the interviewer the frequency of travel before giving your reply. But do check on the job requirements before you go for interview.
What's most important is to get a good understanding of what's involved before you are offered the job, rather than being (unpleasantly) surprised after you have already been hired.

Writing Projects/Accomplishments

When writing Projects / Accomplishments, write them in brief yet impactful for potential employers. This part will consist of project objective, what has been implemented & outcome of the project.
Eg:
Bad tracking on quality whenever failure rate is high. Implemented automated material quality SPC control system. This system is able to trigger the team for immediate investigation and corrective action on the floor once the quality yield drops to a certain %. By implementing corrective actions when SPC triggers, it significantly reduces the risk of shipping potential bad quality products to customers. This significantly helps to improve failure rate by 10%.

Recomended to write at least 1-2 projects for each employment after job responsibilities. Another option is to add projects under “Other Information”
